CelcomDigi receives 2600 MHz and 900 MHz spectrum in Malaysia after RM381.75 million payment
The formal assignments could support capacity and coverage. The blocks run for four and five years from November 1; the award does not mean a new network is already live.
CelcomDigi said on October 30 that its subsidiary CDTel received assignments from Malaysia's Communications and Multimedia Commission for 2×20 MHz in the 2600 MHz band and 2×5 MHz in the 900 MHz band. The carrier accepted the award conditions on October 15 and paid RM381.75 million for both blocks at that time. Formal issuance completes that regulatory step; it does not announce that a new network went live that day. [1][2]
The 2600 MHz assignment runs from November 1, 2026, to October 31, 2030; the 900 MHz assignment runs to October 31, 2031. The Edge Malaysia also reports an annual fee of RM42 million for 2600 MHz and RM3,500 per apparatus for 900 MHz. Those recurring charges are separate from the upfront payment. [1][2]
CelcomDigi says the assignment gives it a contiguous 2×40 MHz holding at 2600 MHz and improves its position at 900 MHz. It expects more capacity and coverage, but supplied no measured improvement or timetable for new areas. Digital News Asia places the move within the regulator's wider spectrum exercise and distinguishes the nationwide 5G network operated by Digital Nasional Berhad. The photograph depicts a CelcomDigi booth at a 2023 event: it is an archive image, not the spectrum handover. [1][3]
