Spain proposes €17.45m for very rural 5G; Orange accounts for 70%

A provisional proposal allocates €12.24m to Orange and €5.21m to Telefónica for 129 sites. Applicants can still respond; this is not deployed coverage.

Spain's government published a provisional grant proposal on October 23 worth €17.45 million to bring 5G mobile communications to very rural areas without a 4G or 5G signal and no commercial deployment planned within three years. The list covers 129 sites and 358 eligible areas. These are proposed projects, not installed masts or a final award. [1][2]

Orange Espagne has six projects and about €12.24 million, or 70% of the proposed total. Telefónica Móviles España has eight projects and about €5.21 million, the remaining 30%. Galicia includes two substantial proposed amounts: €3.98 million for Orange and €0.85 million for Telefónica. Europa Press covered the proposal, but its operator totals differ slightly from the ministry table; the figures here follow the official document. [2][3]

Applicants have ten working days from the day after publication to accept, withdraw or make representations. A final decision and project construction are still ahead. The programme funds active equipment and auxiliary infrastructure; this proposal does not yet establish that users in the listed areas can receive 5G service. The photograph shows an existing mobile mast in Spain in 2024, unrelated to the proposed projects. [1][2]
